〝Plumber is going to Professional〞

From long time, Plumbers are treated as workers with junior academic level. In fact, they play very important role and support the growth of economic and social development of our society.

Nowadays, as government provides good basic middle school education, most of the young plumbers have already completed the education of Form 3 and, some even Form 5. They may not have chance to continue their education when they are teenager. Some of them start their career as a plumber, and aware that they need to further develop their career later.

At present, a professional plumber not only need to posses the skill of installation, but also understands the requirements of related government departments and clients. He is required to lead his colleague to complete the works safely, cost efficiently and timely. Sometimes, higher requirements may be requested, which include designs and liaison with different work parties. To further develop their career in the field, they must strengthen their knowledge in order to tackle future challenges.

Most of the young plumbers receive technical training provided by CICTA and IVE, which mainly focuses on skill training so that the trainee can reach the level of a technician. Once they have completed the courses, especially the IVE course of craft certificate in plumbing, they are eligible to apply a short course to become a licensed plumber. In most cases, once they are awarded with a plumber license, they have completed all the academic development in Plumbing. They are still young but there is no chance for any further study.

How to assist these young technicians for further development? It is not only a question of government policy, but also support and motivation from related institutions and associations. Foresee coming years, it is not difficult to set a way for plumber going to professional - from craftsman, technician and then, a recognized plumbing engineer.
